Starting a Career in Cloud or DevSecOps: What Should You Learn First?

Published
1 min read

Many aspiring engineers are eager to enter cloud or DevSecOps roles. With tools like Azure, CI/CD pipelines, container platforms, and security automation becoming popular, it’s tempting to jump straight into advanced technologies.

However, one common mistake beginners make is skipping foundational concepts.

From my research into entry-level cloud and DevSecOps learning paths, the most important foundations seem to be:

  • Understanding basic Linux commands and system behavior

  • Networking fundamentals (IP, DNS, ports, protocols)

  • Basic programming or scripting knowledge

  • Core security principles

Tools evolve quickly, but fundamentals stay relevant.

Instead of rushing into complex platforms, building a strong base may reduce confusion and help learners grow more confidently.

For those already working in cloud or DevSecOps roles —
what fundamentals helped you the most early in your journey?
